How we built Marju Studio, an AI product-photo app.

What Marju Studio does

Marju Studio is AI product photography for shapewear, swimwear and lingerie brands. A brand starts with a photo it already has, taken on a phone, on a mannequin or as a flat lay. It chooses models from a cast that goes from petite to plus and covers every skin tone, and gets pictures ready for its online store.

The problem it solves

Photoshoots cost a lot and take time, and finding models in every size isn’t easy. On top of that, many AI photo tools turn away shapewear, swim and intimates photos. Marju was built around exactly those categories.

What we built

• The concept: who it’s for, how it works in three steps (your product, your cast, your pictures) and how it’s priced.
• The app: upload a photo, choose models, check every picture, touch up a small spot or reshoot for free, then download in 4K or as a file ready to import into Shopify.
• A person in the loop: any picture can be sent to the team to be fixed by hand, usually within one business day.
• Accounts and plans: private photo storage for each brand, and monthly plans that charge for finished pictures, not tries.
• The website, marjustudio.com: real samples, how it works, pricing, sign-in and a waitlist.

Decisions that made it work

• The product stays the product. Marju is built to keep the cut, color, seams, neckline, leg line and pattern as photographed. The model changes; the garment is meant to stay the same, and the brand checks every picture before using it.
• Pay for results, not attempts. If a picture doesn’t come through, it isn’t charged, and nobody has to ask.
• Every body on every plan. The whole cast is included in every plan, so no brand has to pay more to show a bigger size.
• Private by default. Each brand’s photos are stored privately, and no other brand can see them.
• Adults only. Photos of anyone who looks under 18 are turned away.

AI is only half of an AI app. The other half is the product around it: what happens when a picture fails, who fixes it, what it costs and how private it is. That’s where most of our time went.

Where it is now

Marju is opening to a small number of brands first, through a waitlist. Invited brands get 10 free pictures with no card needed, and monthly plans start at $29. We also shared a short look at how it was built on our Instagram, @baredigitalstudio.
